Young people today get a bad rap. Generation Y is portrayed in the media as lazy, incompetent Peter Pans who refuse to grow up. That just isn’t right. We’re also internet-addicted narcissists and everything we do needs to be documented in 140 characters or less.
But that’s not all we’re capable of, and Gen Why seeks to prove we have a lot to give. Founded by two 20-somethings, Fiona Rayher and Tara Mahoney started the project as an outreach and inspiration to youth through speeches, events and partnerships with other social-change organizations.
Their next big party is Bring Your Boomers, an inter-generational event in collaboration with VIVO Media Arts Centre that brings young and old together on the same stage. Come for the dialogues, snacks, door prizes and special appearances from local artists like Indigo. There will also be live music, such as Zachary Gray from The Zolas, and a Do-It-Yourself Gen Why merchandise making station.
The only recommendations: bring a piece of clothing to make DIY merch and your favorite boomer! It takes place at Vivo Media Arts Centre at 1965 Main Street on Saturday March 12th, 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door, but be warned, they sold out last time!
